Tests Find New iPhones Less Durable Than iPhone 5
09/26/2013

While the popularity of Apple’s newest smartphones has soared to unprecedented levels—the electronics company reported it sold 9 million iPhones during the launch weekend of its iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s, compared with 5 million iPhone 5s last year—users eager to buy the latest model may find it lacking in durability.

In a series of tests, San Francisco-based SquareTrade, a provider of electronics protection plan, evaluated the new iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s, Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and Motorola’s Moto X. According to the company, Apple’s newest phones ultimately fared worse than their predecessors—the iPhone5s received a “breakability score” of 5.5, while the iPhone 5c was rated a six. In contrast, the iPhone 5 received a score of five during similar testing completed last year.

“When it comes to breakability, Apple takes a step back with its latest offerings. The iPhone 5S fared worse than its predecessor, the iPhone 5, in our slide test and the iPhone 5C suffered from increased smash-ability in our drop test, as well as reduced grip-ability,” SquareTrade said in a statement on their results.

Samsung’s Galaxy S4, however, was the biggest loser, failing to work after being submerged in water and dropped from five feet off the ground. In contrast, Moto X, the first Motorola phone to be released following Google Inc.’s acquisition of the smartphone maker, scored well.

“We were expecting that at least one of the new iPhone models would up its game but surprisingly, it was the Moto X that proved most forgiving of accidents,” Ty Shay, CMO at SquareTrade, said. “This is the first time we’ve tested the breakability on a Motorola phone [and it is] the only phone we’ve ever tested that’s made in the USA. We were pleased to find that it withstood our drop, slide and dunk test with only the slightest dent. It looks like Google is giving Apple and Samsung a run for their money.”
